Allowances are placeholder amounts included for selections finalized later, such as fixtures, tile, or cabinetry. If your final selection costs less than the allowance, the total contract amount is reduced. If it costs more, the difference is added. For example, if an allowance is $1,000 and you select a $700 item, the total decreases by $300.

Accuracy depends on the clarity of project details, transparency around budget expectations, and any unforeseen conditions uncovered during construction.
